At First Glance


As I lay here, unable to tell if I'm awake or if anything that I'm thinking right now is even real. Was it all just in my head? Was it just a bad dream within a dream? This state of confusion, like I want to move on but can't, it's there since I crossed your path. I don't know what day this is anymore. You kind of lose track of time here. Everything is so quiet around me. Sometimes I hear the faint sound of someone talking, but it all just feels like a long dream that never ends. The icy feeling all through my veins that has become home since that night haunts me. I feel light, but all so heavy at the same time. I feel empty, yet so full. They say one instant can change everything, but for me, life changed not only in one instant, it changed at first glance. I can't shake the feeling I live with inside since that day our eyes met. That feeling that my life was about to change forever and there was absolutely nothing I could do about it. A feeling like you had control over me, like you possessed me. It was only a split second that we met but it was enough. I was driving along the highway on my way home singing along to the song that played on the radio. Come to think of it, I can't remember what song was playing or if a song was even really playing. What I do remember so vividly, every day and every minute since, are your eyes. There you were, on that same highway about to cross my path and change my life forever. I couldn't move after that moment. That one moment, that one glance was all it took, I was frozen inside my own body and inside my own mind. I don't know if it was destiny, I'm not sure if I was supposed to meet you that night. I know that I was asked to stay late and that I should have been home at least an hour before I met you. Would I have still met you if I left when I was supposed to? So many questions run through what I can only imagine to be my mind at this point, but none of it makes sense and everything comes back to that first glance. It's like you knew what was about to happen, it's almost like you intended for it to happen. Will I ever be able to meet you again and ask you why? Did we already meet before? I feel like I would remember those eyes. Do I know someone you love? Who are you? Why me? I want to reach out, I want to shout out, I want to scream out to you, but where are you? Where am I? I have so many questions and no way to ask them, but the main one is, why was our first glance my last breath?
